Anyway, The Modern Lovers’s self-titled debut is a bloody great album. It’s basically Velvet Underground inspired garage rock / proto-punk with a unique flare. If you haven’t listened to it already, go do so. Now. It’s awesome.

Album: Touch

Here’s a great album by little known hardcore punk band Shoulder. It takes a lot of great qualities from previous bands like Hüsker Dü and just does the music really well. There’s not too much to say about it, but if you enjoy hardcore, definitely check this one out.

This album (Love Comes Close) still stands as one of my favorites from 2009, at least in the top 5 if not higher. While not exactly groundbreaking, Cold Cave managed to produce an extremely solid synthpop/darkwave album that has both throwbacks to 80’s synth-driven music and darker, more modern elements. Every song on here works, and though it’s not exactly for everyone, it’s a somewhat accessible and overall proves to be extremely enjoyable.

I’ve had this album sitting around for quite some time on iTunes but never got around to checking it out. Over the last few days, I’ve had to listen to it over and over. It’s a great album that is extremely consistent, with even the worst songs having some merit. The country label is a bit off-putting, but it’s a lot closer to alt-country and consists of influences from many different genres.

So yeah. Sky and the Ocean by Volebeats. Check it out.

Radically different from his work with The Sound, Adrian Borland’s solo career was much more poppy but at the same time still wonderful. I would probably describe his music as a mix of U2 (of whom I’m not a huge fan,) The Cure, and Echo & the Bunnymen, though it doesn’t sound like a rip-off of any of the previous bands.

Either way, listen to his album Alexandria and wonder how he didn’t become huge.

Okay, so I’ve decided to start Tumblring (sp?) again. Instead of posting random songs with absolutely no context like before, I’m going to try following this-isnt-music’s approach to posting which involves psuedo-reviewing the music (or at least giving an opinion about it,) something that for some reason didn’t cross my mind months ago. This style combines my love of reviewing music and short attention span very well.

And that’s about it. Hopefully this will be a success.
